Organic linen, its appeal and its credentials.
Our Skaw organic collection, is GOTS-certified and is produced locally to where it is woven and finished.
The farmers who grow the flax are some of the most passionate ‘organic’ people in their field. Over the past decade they have been perfecting traditional techniques to enable them to grow great flax, organically. All their flax is GOTS Certified.
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. As with all GOTS certification it covers the processing of the fibre into linen, not the cultivation of flax which is covered by governmental organic standards.
As the years have gone by, techniques have improved. Efficient crop rotation has ensured that the optimum balance of minerals and nutrients is left behind for each crop and various varieties of flax have been tested, along with different sowing techniques and even applied mechanical weed treatments. Today, over 10 years later, they see a different landscape. The biodiversity has returned. There is a large presence of earthworms, ladybirds and bees.
Flax needs to ret - a form of rotting - before it can be harvested and the absence of chemicals means that this process is quicker. The yield of flax is not increased by this process, but the quality is higher, the micro-climate also allowing crops to grow more easily and at a natural pace.
